If you're looking to find out the year of your mid-school 1990 to 1999 Bully BMX bike, this guide will help you locate and read the serial number on your frame.
Below we list the known Bully BMX serial number formats. The early 1990's serial numbers are not included. Sorry if your BMX serial number format is one of those. We're updating information all the time.
The serial number on Bully BMX bikes does not indicate model.
The first USA bashguard frames made in 1989 and sold as 1990 models had a serial begining with RX89. The 1991 models had RX90. The 1992 models had an RD91 serial. Between 1992 to the end of production in 1994/5 the serial numbers used were a seemingly random number sequence. More detail is needed on these models to correctly date them by their serial. Serial numbers include: 23991, 166359, 155135, 078017 and 114920.
The serial number is located under the bottom bracket. The format is a string of numbers and letters. Based on the serial sequence models made between 1996 and 1999 were produced in the same factory as Mongoose BMX bikes and carry the similar serial sequencing for bikes made in the same years. The two letter at the beginning HI, HF or HX are thought to be the factory codes.
Eg: HIGG02906
The third letter indicates the year of manufacture.
F | G | H | I |
96 | 97 | 98 | 99 |
For the example above G = 1997.
The fourth letter indicates month of manufacture.
A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L |
JAN | FEB | MAR | APR | MAY | JUN | JUL | AUG | SEP | OCT | NOV | DEC |
For the example above G = July.
The rest of the numbers are the frame number.
This frame was built July 1997. This is not the model year. It is a 1998 model bike.
The serial number will only give you the bike's build year and month. This is not the model year or the year the bike was released and sold in shops. All bikes had a production lead time. If the frame was USA made, the production lead time was plus 3-6 months. If the frame was made in Taiwan this was plus 6-9 months. This is important if you are restoring and want to know what decals the frame would have originally had. The last thing to note is that the serial number on GT BMX bikes does not indicate model. On early mid school USA made frames this was stamped separately.
On each BMX Catalogue model page we summarise the serial numbers for that model. We also list a few example serial numbers to help you identify the date of your frame.
